Not many words are as accurately descriptive as the term “dermal filler.” These miracles of the aesthetic world are used to “fill” wrinkles from beneath. Fillers work on what are known as static wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that are on display at all times. The other type of wrinkle is known as dynamic and they form with muscle movements during behaviors such as squinting or frowning. Botox works on that type of wrinkle.
Here are the details on four of the popular fillers offered by Dr. Lavey.
- Restylane® is a dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar that helps the skin retain its shape and volume. Hyaluronic acid molecules bind to water in the body, plumping the skin. Restylane is great for addressing wrinkles and creases around the mouth and lips, and under the eyes.
- Radiesse® is different than other fillers in that it has tiny calcium particles suspended in a smooth gel. The calcium particles help fill in the wrinkle, plus stimulate the body to produce new collagen, which is the skin’s main support protein.
- Sculptra® is the longest-lasting filler. It is made of tiny beads of a biodegradable sugar, poly-L-lactic acid. When injected deep into the dermis, these beads stimulate the production of new collagen. This creates results that aren’t immediate, instead improving with time as new collagen is produced. Sculptra is usually recommended in three injection sessions with Dr. Lavey and results can then last two years. Sculptra is excellent for wrinkles and folds, particularly the deep ones that run from the nose to the lips (nasolabial) and lip to chin (marionette).
- Perlane® is made by the same company as Restylane and is a sister product. Also made of hyaluronic acid, Perlane has slightly larger particles. This makes Perlane better for deeper wrinkles. It has to be used in areas where there is supporting fat, due to its thicker makeup. Perlane is good for large nasolabial folds and worry lines on the forehead. It can also enhance the volume and size of the lips.
