What to Expect During Your Rhinoplasty with Dr. Lavey

One of the most common concerns of men and women who visit us here at our Danville rhinoplasty practice is what exactly should they expect during the procedure. By and large, each rhinoplasty that Dr. Lavey performs varies from one patient to another, depending on their cosmetic goals and existing nasal structure.

However, there are certain techniques that remain constant during a nose-reshaping procedure. Read on below to have an idea of what your rhinoplasty with Dr. Lavey will be like.

Understanding What Happens During Rhinoplasty

Generally, the main goal of the procedure is to create a more refined appearance of your nose and make it appear more balanced with the rest of your face. This goal could be achieved through a variety of ways such as reducing a hump, changing the angle between the upper lip and the nose, or refining the shape of the bridge.

During the procedure, majority of the nasal skin will be separated from its supporting foundation that is comprised mostly of bones and cartilage and will be consequently sculpted to your desired shape.

There are 2 primary rhinoplasty techniques utilized by Dr. Lavey:

  • Closed Rhinoplasty – This is used mostly for patients having changes in the upper two-thirds of their nose. All scars are inside the nose.
  • Open Rhinoplasty – It is very useful to precisely change the shape of the nasal tip in addition to the upper nose. It includes an external (outside) scar across the strut separating your nostrils. This technique is often more complex and could last longer than close rhinoplasty.

After the procedure, you will most likely feel that your nose is congested and it will be splinted for support and protection. Changes will most likely be noticeable after the swelling and bruising has fully subsided within several weeks. However, the most desirable changes will most likely be noticed within 6 months to a year.
