When Not to Have a Tummy Tuck

If you’ve been unhappy lately with the appearance of your abdomen, may it be a protruding lower belly or the appearance of love handles, a tummy tuck here at our Bay Area plastic surgery practice may help you regain the flat and firm midsection you used to have.

Dr. Lavey’s unique approach to a tummy tuck procedure is more than just removing the excess skin and fat in the abdominal area; his approach is geared towards achieving an aesthetically beautiful midsection that is proportional with the rest of your body.

Are You Not An Ideal Candidate?

Despite the popularity of tummy tuck, it should be noted that it’s a not a plastic surgery procedure for everyone. In addition, it should never be considered as a weight loss tool. By and large, the best candidates for the procedure are men and women who are already within their ideal weight but are having difficulties getting rid of excess skin and fat despite practice of a careful diet and regular exercise.

A tummy tuck may not give you the optimal results if:

  • you are still in the process of losing weight
  • you have plans of pregnancy and childbirth following surgery; future pregnancies and childbirth can cause the abdominal muscles to stretch again which will only negate the wonderful results of your tummy tuck
  • you smoke; whether it’s simply the occasional puff or the chain-smoking type, smoking before surgery can significantly delay healing and increase your chances of developing post-surgery complications such as infection and pneumonia

Ultimately, if you’ve been thinking of getting a tummy tuck, it will work to your advantage if you are near within your ideal weight, you are done giving birth, and you have quit smoking at least 6 weeks before your tummy tuck surgery.

Combining a Tummy Tuck with Other Procedures

One of the great things about the  tummy tuck procedure is it can be done in combination with other plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, thigh lift, and even minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers. It all depends on your cosmetic goals and preferences.
