Cosmetic surgery was originally strictly the domain of women. Men thought it was too vain to worry about a wrinkle here or there. But today, especially as men age and have to compete with younger rivals in the workplace that has changed. Today men account for around 10 percent of the cosmetic procedures performed.
What would you think are the top five procedures for men? In order, they are liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, correction of enlarged male breasts, and the facelift.
Here’s some information on cosmetic surgery for men.
Getting a new nose
For men, rhinoplasty is different than the procedure performed on women. First, the male nose is much different than the female nose. It is larger, wider, and often has suffered some sort of prior damage or injury. In contrast, the feminine nose is slender, delicate, and needs a deft touch during rhinoplasty.
Men opt to have nose surgery generally for two reasons. As with women, the first is to improve appearance. But for men, a close second is to improve function. This can be an issue due to injury, say from a sports injury or roughhousing, or there can be a congenital issue with function. Even the seeming innocence of snoring can be a sign of problems with male nose function.
Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, has always been popular with women. After all, who wants droopy eyelids, loose skin, bags, and circles? Eyelid surgery can correct all of those issues.
For men, eyelid surgery involves removing fat deposits and improving eyesight. Men generally have more skin in the brow area, which can lead to more pronounced drooping. Droopy eyelids can make a man seem much older than he actually is. Plus, it can make him seem perpetually sad or tired.
The push for male blepharoplasty was driven by the recession. Men are finding the odds stacked against older workers. Eyelid surgery can help disguise a man’s true age.
Liposuction and breast reduction
Men are also having liposuction and breast reduction. This goes in line with the increasing waistlines across the country.
