If you’re old enough, you remember the days when Kate Moss was a big-time supermodel, complete with heroin addict-esque, anorexic looks and no shape. For some reason, the perceived ideal for female looks was skinny and shapeless.
Thankfully those days are over. Now, models are encouraged to have a feminine figure. The hourglass is back. Just look at Joan from Mad Men or Nicki Minaj or Kim Kardashian. It seems Sir Mixalot and his “Baby’s Got Back” homage to big booties was before it’s time!
The preferred method of increasing a patient’s backside now is a procedure called a Brazilian butt lift. It has replaced butt augmentation with implants for most patients.
What is a Brazilian butt lift compared with butt augmentation?
The difference is basically fat transfer versus implants. In a Brazilian butt lift, a patient’s own fat is used for the augmentation. In implant augmentation, implants are surgically placed. In implant augmentation, the results are permanent. Problem is, sometimes implants can shift and move. This requires revision surgery. Dr. Lavey believes the Brazilian butt lift is the superior procedure, unless the patient does not have enough fat to harvest. The consensus seems to be that Brazilian butt lift augmentation delivers more natural looking results.
A Brazilian butt lift
A Brazilian lift has an added secondary benefit. Because the procedure requires a patient’s own fat to re-inject into the buttocks, Dr. Lavey first performs liposuction on an area with excess fat. This can help to accentuate the results of the fat transfer. A mix of local anesthesia, epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected into the target area. Tiny incisions are made and Dr. Lavey inserts a thin cannula to loosen and suction out the fat in the area. Up to three times the amount of fat that will be re-injected may be harvested.
The fat, tissue, liquid, and blood that were removed are run through a centrifuge to separate and purify the fat. Dr. Lavey then re-injects the fat back into the buttocks through dozens of small injections all over your buttocks. Special attention is paid to the upper area to make it more round.
How long do results take?
Results from a Brazilian butt lift are immediately visible, but there will be some swelling and bruising. This subsides in a few days. After that your results keep improving because it takes some time for the fat to “take.” It can take a full year before a patient’s full results are visible. Over time, some of the initial volume from your fat grafting procedure will diminish. On average, patients retain 60 to 80% of the transferred fat, with the body absorbing the rest.
