Backing Up Your Back

back liftsIf you’ve gained and then lost a good deal of weight, or if your skin has simply lost some of its elasticity and underlying collagen support due to aging, you’ll notice loose skin. It’s obvious in our abdomen area, as we see it in the mirror every day. But what about your back? It can have the same problem.

In women, loose back skin tends to occur around the bra area. This can make it uncomfortable to wear a bra. Plus, it can make you self-conscious if wearing a bathing suit or low back dress.

A back lift with Dr. Lavey can solve this problem.

What is a back lift?

A cosmetic back lift reduces the amount of excess flesh in the back. It removes the rolls or bulges that can be seen in the middle or upper back areas, and can help with the underarms, as well.

How is a back lift done?

A back lift is done to address loose back skin, prominent “love handles,” or persistent back fat. The procedure is not overly difficult and Dr. Lavey usually performs it as an outpatient procedure. The surgery usually lasts two hours or less.

Dr. Lavey begins with a small incision around the mid-back area. He removes excess fat and trims loose skin. Then he takes the remaining skin and lightly stretches it and repositions it into its new location, securing it with sutures.

Benefits of a back lift

A back lift will improve the contour and shape of your back. You’ll be more comfortable in clothing and you’ll be happy to show off your back in a swimsuit. Scarring is minimal and is hidden on the bra line.

Recovery

After your surgery, you’ll need to wear a compression garment for the first one to two weeks to help your back adapt to its new slimmer contours. Compression garments also minimize swelling and bruising. You’ll need to avoid exercises or actions that stretch your back for the next few weeks, but generally back lift recovery is not difficult.
