Should I Have Liposuction If I Want to Lose Weight?

In 2013, liposuction reigned supreme amongst surgical cosmetic procedures, up 16.3 percent from that of 2012. While one may assume that its popularity may mean that the public is already familiar with the specifics of the procedure, we would like to clarify one of the most common concerns we get from patients concerning liposuction here at our Danville plastic surgery practice.

Should I have liposuction to lose weight?

The answer is no. First of all, liposuction is a body contouring procedure that is designed to remove excess pockets of fat in certain body areas such as the abdomen, arms, back, chest (in males), flanks, neck, thighs, knees, and ankles.

Helping you lose weight is not the primary goal of liposuction. In fact, you need to be within or near your ideal weight for at least 6 months to be able to undergo the procedure. There are various types of liposuction techniques here at our practice  — from laser to using certain solutions  (tumescent, saline, etc.) and choosing which technique is ideal for you will be one of the primary points to be discussed during your initial consultation.
